Today we had an early start since Mather Pass (3 686m) is known for its sketchy south side. We only had a mile (1,6km) till the summit and it all went really smoothly. On the other side we put micro spikes on but honestly I found Glen Pass a bit steeper compared to this one. There was a nice boot track as well so we were making our way through the snow field pretty fast. At some point I was even a bit disappointed by the lack of snow. Sure safety wise it is good the less snow there is but personally (aka me an adrenaline freak) I wouldn’t mind having a bit more snow especially since I have really a lot of snow experience but that is solely from my point of view. I still see some people struggle even with this little snow there is but yet again, if you are not used to walking on snow everyday in winter then you will probably struggle on a regular mountain as well.
Not that long after our descent we got our feet wet for the first time (today). Since then we crossed multiple creeks/rivers that it was kind of hard to keep track honestly. The sketchy ones are in tomorrow’s section but we might do an alternate that would lead us through a safer crossing. We will see tomorrow. After our lunch break we still had around 7.4 miles (11.84km) to go because today was a big day with around 20 miles (33km). Honestly every mile of that afternoon was totally worth it. I was walking through a gorgeous valley with a gushing river that turned into a calm stream on a meadow. I was speechless and even teared up couple of times. I really felt alive in that moment, trying to take it all in. We still made it to our tentsite before 6pm and set up our groundsheets for another night of cowboy camping.
